Our brains are designed to figure out what things are important and filter out the rest as junk. Doing this takes energy, and is something you probably don’t even notice is happening. Yet, every time you walk into a room, your brain is noticing every item in that space and doing a quick scan to determine “is this important to pay attention to” or not.
It doesn’t matter if the item is a snake about to bite you (important) or a dead leaf on the ground (not important). When you see either object it still requires energy to process what the item is and whether or not it is important.
This is important to be aware of because it means the way you set up, design, and maintain your space will affect how you, your family and friends feel in the space. Think about how you feel when you go to a hotel. The more organized, spacious, and maintained your space is, the more relaxed you are naturally going to feel (because your brain is spending less energy processing the objects in your space).
More relaxed, comfortable people, are happier people, something we all want in our homes. As a mother especially, anything we can do to help keep from feeling tired is a win!
There are some tricks that can be used to help create a relaxing feeling with minimal brain energy being used, while not having a boring too sterile white room. Keep an eye out for a future post to learn how!
Quick Start Tip: Set a timer for 5-10 minutes and pick one small spot to organize. Maybe it's the top of your night stand, maybe it's a kitchen counter, or a desk drawer. Already you're on your way to more energy!
